The Basics

Fistball as a "volleyball-like" sport of teams consisting of 5 players on each side of the field. The crucial difference in fistball: the ball is struck with either fist or arm – never with open hands – and it is allowed to bounce after each contact. The field, or "court" is divided into 2 halves by a marked line and a net or rope at a height of 2 meters for men and 1.90 meters for women. Each team's aim is to strike the ball across the net (rope) in a way that the opponent fails to return. A rally is continued until any team makes an error or a stoppage occurs. Each error made by a team counts as a point for the opponents. The winner is the team that - has won 2, 3, 4 or 5 sets of a set-match - has scored the most points in a time-match.

Formations

Below is the common layout of 5 players on the field.

2 teams consisting of 5 players each play against each other on a court which is divided into 2 halves by a marked line and a net or rope at a height of 2 meters for men and 1.90 meters for women. Players will NOT typically rotate positions, however, teams are able to choose who serves each point.

There are 3 common formations. The "X" consists of 2 in the front, 1 in the middle, and 2 in the back.

The "U" Formation has 2 players in the front, and 3 players near or on the back line.

The "W" formation is similar to the "U", but the middle player is a few steps in front of the other 2 players on the back line.
